Two-time NBA national champion and reality TV star Lamar Odom was found unconscious in a brothel near Las Vegas earlier this week.
Odom checked into Love Ranch in Crystal, Nevada on Saturday, the beginning of four days of nonstop partying, drugs, sex and alcohol. Odom told Love employees that he wanted “to get far away” from something. He instructed employees that he would take no phone calls and that he was there strictly for “rest and relaxation”, according to Love Ranch manager TJ Moore.
Partying Gone Too Far
On Tuesday, Odom was found unconscious in his suite. He was laying on his side with a pinkish discharge flowing from his mouth and nose. Love Ranch employees reported that he used cocaine on his first day at the brothel, drank part of a bottle of cognac and took 10 herbal supplement tablets over his next three days at the Love Ranch.
Odom is perhaps most famous for his marriage to Khloe Kardashian, which was featured on the reality TV show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” in 2009. In 2013, Kardashian filed for divorce from Odom, claiming “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for divorce. The divorce has yet to be finalized.
A History of Substance Abuse
This isn’t Odom’s first run-in with substance abuse. He has abused various substances in the past. In 2001, it was marijuana. In 2013, he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He went to rehab for three months after receiving a DUI.
Many rumors have circulated about Odom’s drug problems, all of which he adamantly denied. Other sources stated that his addiction issues caused a riff between him and Kardashian, and were perhaps the reason that she pursued a divorce.
Would an Intervention Have Made a Difference?
Lamar Odom clearly had a history of experimenting and abusing drugs and alcohol. In the past, he acknowledged his problem and briefly received treatment, but then later denied any struggle with addiction.
It is difficult to tell if Odom’s friends were aware of his struggle with substance abuse. He has few living family members, as his father was a drug addict, and he lost his mother to cancer.
Perhaps his friends advised him to seek help, but he emotionally hijacked them by promising to get better. They may have attempted an intervention on their own.
Had his friends known about his struggles with addiction, they could have helped Odom by staging an intervention with the help of a professional interventionist. Time will tell if Odom will recover from this tragic incident.
